Vigabatrin is an irreversible GABA transaminase inhibitor that can increase the levels of GABA in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid. It was developed in the 1980s. On August 21, 2009, the US FDA approved vigabatrin as monotherapy for pediatric patients 1 month to 2 years old, where the potential benefits of infantile spasms outweigh the potential risk of vision loss, and as an adjuvant (additional) treatment for adult patients with refractory complex partial epilepsy (CPS). Vigabatrin is an analog of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). It can specifically bind to GABA aminotransferase and irreversibly, leading to an increase in GABA concentration in the brain, thereby exerting anti-epileptic effects. Clinically, vigabatrin is used to treat epilepsy in which other anti-epileptic drugs are ineffective, especially partial seizures; vigabatrin can also treat infantile spasms (West syndrome, West syndrome).

Precautions when taking Vigabatrin:

Treatment with Vigabatrin (vigabatrin) may result in suicidal ideation: Patients taking antiepileptic drugs are at increased risk for suicidal ideation/behavior. Monitor changes in the patient's behavior and notify the doctor immediately if suicidal thoughts or symptoms of depression occur.

The toxic effects of vigabatrin on the retina may cause peripheral visual field defects in children, so regular ophthalmological monitoring is required. The use of vigabatrin should be done under the guidance of an epilepsy specialist or a child neurologist. Reactions after taking the medication should be reported to the doctor promptly.

Treatment with vigabatrin tablets Sabrilex may affect your ability to drive and use machines. Generally, patients with uncontrolled epilepsy are not allowed to drive or operate potentially dangerous machinery. Given reports of drowsiness during clinical use of vigabatrin tablets Sabrilex, patients should be warned before initiating treatment with Sabrilex.

Receiving Vigabatrin (vigabatrin tablets) may cause peripheral neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy occurs in adult patients and is manifested by numbness or tingling in the toes or feet, reduced vibration or position sensation in the distal lower extremities, or progressive loss of reflexes.
