Raloxifene is a benthiophene compound, a new concept non-hormonal drug that resists bone resorption, and is a second-generation selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). SERMs can act as estrogen agonists or antagonists. Raloxifene has estrogen agonistic effects on the skeleton and cardiovascular system and estrogen antagonistic effects on the breast and uterus. Let’s learn about the instructions and contraindications below.

【Indications】

Raloxifene is mainly used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It can significantly reduce the incidence of vertebral fractures, but the reduction in the incidence of hip fractures has not been confirmed.

【Usage and Dosage】

The recommended usage of raloxifene is to take 1 tablet (60 mg based on raloxifene hydrochloride) orally daily, which can be taken at any time of the day without meal restrictions.

No dose adjustment is required in the elderly. Due to the natural course of the disease, raloxifene requires long-term use. It is generally recommended that: dietary calcium, and women who do not get enough calcium take calcium and vitamin D. Or as directed by your doctor.

【Adverse reactions】

Common side effects of raloxifene include: vasodilation (hot flashes), venous thromboembolic events: including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, retinal vein thrombosis, superficial vein thrombophlebitis, calf cramps, influenza symptoms, peripheral edema, thrombocytopenia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, rash, mild breast symptoms, etc. Patients should not use raloxifene blindly.

【Taboo】

It is contraindicated in persons allergic to raloxifene or any excipients contained in the tablets.

Raloxifene is contraindicated in those with current or past venous thromboembolic disease (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and retinal vein thrombosis.

Raloxifene is contraindicated in patients with reduced liver function, including cholestasis, and severe renal impairment.

Raloxifene is contraindicated in patients with unexplained uterine bleeding and endometrial cancer.

Raloxifene is only used in postmenopausal women. Raloxifene is contraindicated in women of possible pregnancy. Raloxifene may cause fetal harm if ingested by a pregnant woman. If a pregnant woman accidentally takes this drug or becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be informed of the possible harm to the fetus.

【Notes】

Raloxifene has no effect on reducing blood vessel dilation (hot flashes) or other estrogen-related menopausal symptoms.

Raloxifene is not suitable for use in male patients. The effects of raloxifene on the ability to drive and operate machinery are unknown.

Raloxifene may cause a further increase in serum triglyceride levels in patients with hypertriglyceridemia due to oral estrogens. Therefore, serum triglyceride levels should be monitored when raloxifene is used in patients with such a history.
