Which one is more effective, Vigabatrin or Topax?

The first choice for epilepsy medication is definitely Vigabatrin. If it is confirmed to be ineffective after use, other anti-epileptic drugs will be considered. When there is really no choice, Topaxi is the last choice. However, Vigabatrin is not marketed in mainland China, and domestic doctors will use Topaxitin in the treatment of epilepsy. Vigabatrin is not only suitable for children with peak arrhythmias. Through the use of a large number of patients, it has been observed that vigabatrin is also effective for partial and generalized seizures of epilepsy, and the effect is excellent! It is recommended that patients take medication under the guidance of a doctor and receive symptomatic treatment.

To evaluate our experience with the antiepileptic drug Vigabatrin (also known as vigabatrin, VGB) through a retrospective analysis of databases and chart review.

One trial of 73 patients, 43 girls and 33 boys, received Vigabatrin over a seven-year period. The mean patient age at the time of introduction of Vigabatrin was 87 months (range, 5-257 months). Vigabatrin was used as monotherapy in 12 of 73 cases; in 61 of 73 cases it was used as an add-on agent.

Seizure types include secondary generalized seizures (21), mixed seizures (21), partial seizures (18), and generalized seizures (13). The cause of seizures was idiopathic/cryptogenic in 22 patients, symptomatic in 50 patients, and undetermined in 1 patient.

Trial results showed that the average treatment time was 16 months. Vigabatrin was effective in 30 patients (7 seizure-free, 23 with >90% seizure reduction), partially effective in 4 patients (50-90% seizure reduction), and ineffective in 38 patients (<50% seizure reduction). Nearly 50% of patients with infantile spasms respond to Vigabatrin. All patients underwent ophthalmological evaluation; of the 12 patients who could undergo static threshold perimetry, 2 (16%) demonstrated characteristic visual field constriction.

Conclusion: Vigabatrin can effectively and significantly reduce the frequency of seizures in nearly half of children with epileptic seizures (including refractory epilepsy). Despite growing concerns about visual side effects, this drug still plays an important role in the medical management of epilepsy in children.
