The effects and efficacy of Riluzole
Riluzole (Riluzole) is used in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a motor neuron disease in which the nerve cells responsible for sending instructions to muscles gradually degenerate, leading to weakness, muscle atrophy and paralysis. Riluzole is used to prolong a patient's life or delay the need for mechanical ventilation. Riluzole should not be used in patients with any other form of motor neuron disease.

Patients in three studies were given 50, 100, or 200 mg of riluzole daily for up to 18 months. The mean survival time of patients who received riluzole was significantly longer compared with those who received placebo. Combining the results from the three studies, over 18 months, patients who took 100 mg of riluzole daily lived an average of 2 months longer than those who took a placebo. Riluzole 50 mg/day was no more effective than placebo, and 200 mg/day was no more effective than 100 mg/day, but the drug was no more effective than placebo in late-stage ALS.
