In-depth analysis of the efficacy and application of obeticholic acid tablets
Obeticholic acid (Obeticholic acid) is an innovative drug mainly used to treat primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), an autoimmune disease that causes gradual damage to the bile ducts and liver, leading to fibrosis and cirrhosis. In this disease, the accumulation of bile acids increases the risk of damage to the bile ducts and liver fibrosis.
As a farnesoidX receptor (FXR) agonist, obeticholic acid regulates bile and cholesterol metabolism by binding to FXR in the nucleus of liver and intestinal cells. After activating FXR, obeticholic acid can effectively increase the flow of bile in the liver while inhibiting bile synthesis, thereby reducing the risk of hepatocytes being exposed to excess bile acids. Cholestasis is considered an important factor in causing inflammation and cirrhosis, and obeticholic acid significantly alleviates these adverse effects by reducing bile acid synthesis.

With itsFXR agonist properties, obeticholic acid not only reduces bile acid production but also suppresses biomarkers associated with inflammation, thus slowing the progression of liver fibrosis. Existing research shows that obeticholic acid may help improve the survival rate of PBC patients, but the direct relationship between bile acids and survival rate is not yet fully understood.
In actual clinical applications, obeticholic acid is usually used in combination with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and is suitable for PBC patients who have poor response to UDCA or who cannot tolerate UDCA. This combination strategy is designed to enhance treatment efficacy and thereby improve patients' quality of life. As an FXR agonist, obeticholic acid shows positive effects in improving bile acid metabolism and reducing liver damage, and has become one of the important choices for the treatment of PBC.
