Budesonide is approved for use in patients with glucocorticoid-dependent or -independent bronchial asthma and asthmatic chronic bronchitis. Is it good to take budesonide for asthma?

Clinical trials have shown that budesonide is more effective for asthma. The clinical trial included 15 patients with distal active colitis. Divided into two groups: one group of 8 patients, oral administration of Budesonide (Budenofalk) 9 mg qd; a group of 7 patients, oral administration of Budesonide (Budenofalk) 3 mg tid. The degree of symptom improvement was evaluated at 0, 4, and 8 weeks. Colonoscopy was performed at 0 and 8 weeks, and budesonide concentrations in the mucosal biopsies were measured. Results: The peak concentration of the drug in the 9 mg qd group was higher than that in the 3 mg tid group, the systemic effect was also stronger, and the inhibitory effect of hormones was more obvious. There were no differences in the area under the plasma concentration curve and drug effects between the two groups (14% decrease in lymphocytes and 26% increase in neutrophils). Concentrations of budesonide were high in the mucosa of distal colon biopsies in both groups. After 8 weeks, 71% of patients in the 9 mg qd and 38% of the 3 mg tid groups had improved symptoms. In the 9 mg qd group, the endoscopic index improved from 10±2 to 2±3; in the 3 mg tid group, the endoscopic index improved from 9±2 to 4±417 (P = 0102). 

Conclusion: This study showed that budesonide is able to reach the distal colon and rectum. Further studies of the effects of budesonide in the intestinal mucosa are needed, and a control group is necessary. Budesonide is effective in treating distal colitis with few side effects. Large clinical trials are necessary to confirm budesonide's effectiveness and evaluate possible side effects.
