Developed by the Swiss company Roche, it is an oral anti-cytomegalovirus infection drug. Valganciclovir hydrochloride is also the prodrug of ganciclovir. It is an active ganciclovir valine ester. After oral administration, it can be rapidly hydrolyzed into ganciclovir by phosphatase in intestinal and liver cells. Its antiviral spectrum and mechanism of action are similar to ganciclovir, but its bioavailability is significantly higher than that of ganciclovir. Its oral bioavailability is 62.4%, which is 10 times that of ganciclovir, while its toxicity is greatly reduced.

Treatment of induction of cytomegalovirus retinitis: The recommended dose is 900 mg (two 450 mg tablets) twice daily for 21 days. Maintenance: After induction therapy, or in adult patients with inactive cytomegalovirus retinitis, the recommended dose is 900 mg orally once daily.

In May 2001, the US FDA approved the listing of Valganciclovir Hydrochloride Tablets for clinical use in the treatment of acute retinitis caused by CMV infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. In May 2003, its indications were expanded. Valganciclovir Hydrochloride Tablets are used to prevent and treat secondary CMV infection in organ transplant recipients. Valganciclovir hydrochloride tablets were launched in my country in 2006.

The antiviral effect of valganciclovir hydrochloride tablets has been clinically confirmed by treating AIDS patients with newly diagnosed retinitis (clinical study WV15376). After 4 weeks of treatment with valganciclovir hydrochloride tablets, the detection rate of CMV virus decreased from 46% (32/69) to 7% (4/55). 

Clinical studies of valganciclovir hydrochloride tablets in AIDS patients infected with CMV retinitis have shown that valganciclovir hydrochloride tablets and intravenous ganciclovir are equally effective in the induction treatment of CMV retinitis.

After it is launched in my country, patients can buy the drug in regular hospitals with a doctor's prescription. However, the original drug is usually more expensive.
