(Vigabatrin tablets) can be used to assist in the treatment of partial seizures in refractory complex epilepsy

Vigabatrin is indicated as an adjunctive therapy for the treatment of adults and children (10 years and older) with refractory complex partial seizures (CPS, also known as focal seizures) who have had an inadequate response to other alternative treatments and where the potential benefits outweigh the risks of vision loss. Vigabatrin tablets are not suitable for first-line treatment of CPS.

CPS, also known as temporal lobe seizures and psychomotor seizures, manifests as partial seizures accompanied by varying degrees of disturbance of consciousness. Epileptic discharges originate from the medial temporal lobe or frontal lobe, with different origins, diffusion pathways, and speeds. The clinical manifestations can vary greatly. A simple partial seizure may occur first (the duration may be long or short), and then consciousness disorder may occur. Special sensory or simple autonomic symptoms are often auras. Attacks originating from deep structures (medial temporal lobe, limbic system, etc.) such as psychotic attacks (aura) may be short-lived and may cause disturbances in consciousness quickly; they may also begin with disturbances of consciousness, or even simply manifest disturbances of consciousness.

The mechanism of action of Vigabatrin is to irreversibly inhibit GABA aminotransferase (GABA-T) and increase the concentration of GABA in the brain to exert its effects. It is a drug used to treat epilepsy and infantile spasms and was developed in the 1980s. The treatment was approved in the UK in 1989.

On August 21, 2009, the US FDA approved Vigabatrin (vigabatrin tablets) as a monotherapy for pediatric patients aged 1 month to 2 years old. Its potential benefits of infantile spasms outweigh the potential risk of vision loss, and as an adjuvant (additional) treatment (CPS) for adult patients with refractory complex partial epilepsy.
