According to prescribing information for Ustekinumab, the more common side effects are upper respiratory tract infection, headache and fatigue, and different versions are associated with several types of serious adverse reactions. These include an increased risk of infections such as tuberculosis and an increased risk of certain types of cancer. As with other immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine, brain swelling in posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a risk. Clinical trials have shown that subcutaneous ustekinumab is generally well tolerated. Most treatment-emergent adverse events were mild. Ustekinumab should not be used in patients with active infections that their doctor considers to be serious.
