Can I stop taking pomalidomide once I take it?
Pomalidomide(Pomalidomide) is an oral drug with dual immunomodulatory and anti-tumor effects. It is widely used to treat relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. It delays disease progression by inhibiting tumor cell growth signals, promoting cell apoptosis, and enhancing the immune system's ability to recognize abnormal cells. Because its treatment mechanism involves the continuous regulation of the immune system, many patients mistakenly believe that "once you take it, you cannot stop taking it." In fact, this understanding is not entirely accurate.

Pomalidomide treatment is an individualized, staged process. Doctors usually decide the length of treatment and whether to interrupt it based on the patient's response, side effects and hematological indicators. Some patients can adjust the dose or discontinue the medication according to the doctor's advice after the therapeutic effect is stable. If there are obvious adverse reactions during the treatment, such as abnormal blood count, fatigue or increased risk of infection, the doctor may also recommend suspending the medication to reduce the risk. It can be seen that whether to discontinue medication is not a "one size fits all" decision, but is decided by a comprehensive evaluation by the medical team.
In addition, pomalidomide is an immunomodulatory drug. Sudden or unauthorized discontinuation of the drug may lead to fluctuations in the condition or even an increased risk of recurrence. Therefore, any medication adjustments should be made under the guidance of a doctor. After some patients reach a state of remission, doctors may recommend gradually reducing the dose or setting up an intermittent medication regimen based on the duration of the effect and risk assessment to maintain the therapeutic effect and reduce long-term side effects.
From experience, most countries regard pomalidomide as a "long-term maintenance treatment drug", but not all patients need to take it for life. If the condition is stable and laboratory indicators recover well, doctors will develop a personalized discontinuation strategy based on individual responses. Instead of focusing on “whether the drug can be stopped”, it is more important to maintain a good monitoring mechanism and doctor-patient communication, and regularly review blood images, liver and kidney functions, and changes in condition.
