Efficacy of Riluzole

Riluzole (Riluzole) is used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Riluzole belongs to a class of drugs called benzothiazoles, which work by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the body that affect nerves and muscles. Riluzole is available as tablets and as a suspension (liquid) that can be taken orally, or it can also be used as an oral film that dissolves on the tongue. Usually taken on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals), twice daily, every 12 hours.

The efficacy of riluzole was demonstrated in two studies (Study 1 and 2) that evaluated 50 mg of riluzole twice daily in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Both studies included patients with familial or sporadic ALS, less than 5 years of disease duration, and baseline forced vital capacity greater than or equal to 60% of normal. Patients treated with riluzole had longer time to tracheostomy or death compared with placebo, and patients treated with riluzole had improved early survival compared with placebo.
