What is levocadopa combination tablet (Sinemet)?
Levocadopa combination tablet (Sinemet) is a drug used to treat Parkinson's disease and is also used to treat some other neurological disorders. It is a combination drug containing two active ingredients: levodopa (Levodopa) and carbidopa (Carbidopa). These two ingredients work together to reduce symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease.
Parkinson's disease is a chronic neurological disorder that often causes motor dysfunction such as muscle stiffness, tremors, and slowness of movement. These symptoms are primarily caused by decreased levels of dopamine in the brain, a neurotransmitter responsible for coordinating muscle activity. Levodopa is the precursor of dopamine and can cross the blood-brain barrier, enter the brain, and then be converted into dopamine in the brain, thereby increasing dopamine levels and improving symptoms.
However, there are some problems with levodopa itself. It is broken down by enzymes in the gut before entering the brain, which reduces its effectiveness. This is where carbidopa comes into play. Carbidopa is a peripheral dopamine alkalizing drug. It can reduce the decomposition of levodopa in the intestine by inhibiting the activity of these enzymes, thereby increasing the amount of levodopa entering the brain and making the effect better.
The use of levocandopa combination tablets is often effective in reducing motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease, including muscle stiffness, tremors and bradykinesia. It can improve patients' quality of life and make it easier for them to perform daily activities. However, it’s important to note that it does not cure Parkinson’s disease, it only relieves symptoms. Therefore, patients often need to take this drug long-term.
