Efavirenz belongs to the class of non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). Emtricitabine and tenofovir belong to a class of drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). They work by reducing the amount of HIV in the body. Although the efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir combination will not cure HIV, these drugs may reduce a patient's chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related diseases (such as serious infections or cancer).
