How effective is the new drug osimertinib against non-small cell lung cancer?
Osimertinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, especially for patients with ALK positive non-small cell lung cancer. It can effectively block the activity of ALK protein in cancer cells, thereby slowing down the growth and spread of tumors. Due to its high selectivity, osimertinib has been shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials.
In a clinical trial at Yale Cancer Center, adjuvant treatment with osimertinib significantly prolonged survival and reduced the risk of recurrence in patients with EGFR mutated early-stage non-small cell lung cancer after complete resection. Data show that 73% of patients in the osimertinib group still maintain cancer-free survival after 4 years, which is significantly improved compared to 38% of patients in the placebo group.

Another study showed that osimertinib is the first to treat IB/II/IIIA stageEGFRMutationNSCLC Targeted drugs that have statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in disease-free survival (DFS). In patients with stage II to IIIA disease, the 5-year overall survival rate was 85% in the osimertinib group, which was significantly higher than the 73% rate in the placebo group.
In addition to monotherapy, osimertinib has also shown good efficacy in combination with other drugs. For example, the combination with saivotinib has shown higher clinical activity in patients with EGFR mutated, MET amplified advanced NSCLC.
Osimertinib has relatively few adverse effects and provides better tolerability and quality of life. Multiple studies have confirmed its good safety and tolerability.
Osimertinib has shown significant efficacy in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, especially in improving cancer-free survival and prolonging overall survival. Its high selectivity and good safety profile make it an important drug in the treatment of NSCLC.
