Is Mitotane a targeted drug?
Mitotane (Mitotane) is a drug used to treat adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) and Cushing's syndrome. Its main mechanism of action is to reduce tumor tissue and excess hormone secretion by selectively destroying adrenocortical cells.
Targeted drugs refer to drugs that selectively kill cancer cells while having less impact on normal cells by specifically recognizing and binding to specific molecules (usually abnormally expressed proteins or gene mutation products) on tumor cells. These drugs usually target specific molecular targets, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, etc., and inhibit the proliferation and survival of tumor cells by interfering with signaling pathways.

The main mechanism of action of mitotane is by interfering with the function and structure of adrenocortical cells, leading to the selective destruction and apoptosis of these cells. Specifically, Mitotane affects the mitochondrial function of adrenocortical cells and interferes with the structure of cell membranes, leading to cell death. Although Mitotane has the characteristic of selectively acting on adrenocortical cells, its effect is not through a specific molecular target, but through a general cytotoxic mechanism.
Unlike targeted drugs, mitotane does not work by specifically binding to specific molecular targets on tumor cells. Instead, it reduces tumor tissue and excess hormone secretion through selective toxic effects on adrenocortical cells. Therefore, although mitotane has certain selectivity, it does not meet the strict definition of a targeted drug.
Mitotane is not a targeted drug. Although it selectively acts on adrenocortical cells, its mechanism of action is not through a specific molecular target. In contrast, Mitotane treats adrenocortical cancer and Cushing's syndrome by selectively destroying adrenocortical cells through generalized cytotoxicity. When treating with Mitotane, patients should be under the guidance of a doctor and monitored regularly to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.
