What disease does Valganciclovir/Valganciclovir treat?
Valganciclovir is an antiviral drug used to treat diseases related to cytomegalovirus (CMV). It is converted in the body into the active form of the drug ganciclovir. Valganciclovir has various uses in adult and pediatric patients and can help control cytomegalovirus replication, including the treatment of:
1. Adult patients:
(1) Treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis: Valganciclovir tablets are suitable for the treatment of cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS);
(2) Prevention of CMV disease: Valganciclovir tablets are suitable for preventing cytomegalovirus disease in high-risk kidney, heart and kidney-pancreas transplant patients, especially those whose donors are CMV seropositive and recipients are CMV seronegative (D+/R-).
2. Pediatric patients: Valganciclovir is suitable for the prevention of cytomegalovirus disease in high-risk kidney transplant patients (4 months to 16 years old) and heart transplant patients (1 month to 16 years old).
Patients must follow the doctor's instructions during use and review regularly to ensure safe and effective treatment. Valganciclovir can help control CMV, but it does not cure it. Therefore, do not stop taking valganciclovir without talking to your doctor. Stopping valganciclovir too early may cause the amount of cytomegalovirus in the blood to increase or the virus to become resistant to this drug.
While using valganciclovir, patients should pay close attention to their physical condition and promptly report any discomfort or side effects to their doctor. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, etc. In addition, valganciclovir may also have adverse effects on the hematopoietic system, liver and kidneys, so relevant indicators need to be monitored regularly.
