Can I keep taking Pirfenidone/Axri?
Pirfenidone/Pirfenidone is a drug used to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive lung disease that mainly manifests as scarring and hardening of lung tissue, leading to a gradual decline in respiratory function. The mechanism of pirfenidone is to slow down the fibrosis process of lung tissue by inhibiting the activity of various cytokines, transcription factors and growth factors, thereby improving patients' lung function and quality of life.

As an anti-fibrotic drug, pirfenidone can effectively delay the development of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and reduce the rate of disease progression. Studies have shown that patients taking pirfenidone showed more stable results on lung function tests and had relatively lower rates of hospitalization. The main ingredient of this drug has dual effects against inflammation and fibrosis, reducing the inflammatory response in the lungs and inhibiting the progression of fibrosis by regulating the behavior of fibroblasts.
Regarding the duration of medication, pirfenidone usually needs to be taken for a long time, and the continuity of treatment is one of the keys to its efficacy. The doctor will develop an individualized medication plan based on the patient's actual condition. Although many patients may need to take it long-term, follow-up evaluations should be performed periodically to monitor the medication's effectiveness and possible side effects. Common side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, rash, fatigue, etc. Some patients may experience abnormal liver function, so liver function tests need to be performed regularly during use.
When deciding whether to continue pirfenidone, patients and physicians need to work together to evaluate the benefits and risks of treatment. If the drug is effective and well tolerated, continued use is usually feasible. However, once serious adverse reactions occur or disease progression accelerates, doctors may consider adjusting the treatment plan.
