How long does it take to stop taking ritexitinib?
Ritlecitinib (Ritlecitinib) is a small molecule oral drug used to treat alopecia areata (also known as non-scarring alopecia), a disease characterized by localized loss of hair. For patients, the duration of treatment and when to discontinue ritixitinib are very important issues.
The mechanism of action of ritexitinib is mainly by inhibiting specific tyrosine kinases, thereby blocking signaling pathways related to immune responses and reducing autoimmune attacks on hair follicles. The effects of this drug usually take some time to appear. There are many case reports and small clinical trials reporting promising results with the Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors tofacitinib, litlecitinib, and baricitinib in the treatment of alopecia areata (AA).

Systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according toPRISMA guidelines. Across 30 studies and 289 cases, there were 72.4% responders, 45.7% good responders, and 21.4% partial responders. The average time for hair to start growing was 2.2±6.7 months, and the time for complete hair regeneration was 6.7±2.2 months. All 37 relapses occurred after 2.7 months when treatment was discontinued. The oral route was significantly associated with treatment response compared with topical treatment. There was no difference in response rates between pediatric and adult cases. Future large-scale randomized studies are needed to confirm these findings.
If after 6 months to 1 year of treatment, the patient's symptoms are well controlled and the hair growth is relatively stable, the doctor may consider gradually reducing the dose of the drug or using it intermittently. However, regular follow-up is also required after discontinuation of treatment to monitor for signs of recurrence. If hair loss worsens or other uncomfortable symptoms occur after stopping the medication, the patient should communicate with the doctor in time, as treatment may need to be restarted or the medication regimen may need to be adjusted.
