At what age is neuroblastoma most common in children?
Children's neuroblastoma (Neuroblastoma) is a malignant tumor that mainly occurs in infants and young children. Its high incidence period is usually under 5 years old, especially in infants and young children around 2 years old. This age distribution is closely related to its unique biological characteristics and the developmental process of the cell of origin.
High incidence age distribution
1.Infancy (0-1 years old): About40% of neuroblastoma patients are diagnosed within 1 years old. Tumors in infancy often have relatively benign biological behavior, and some patients may spontaneously degenerate or differentiate into more mature ganglioneuromas, so the prognosis in this age group is usually better.
2.Early childhood (1-5 years old): This is the main high-incidence period of neuroblastoma, accounting for the vast majority of cases. Tumors at this stage may be more aggressive, and some patients will be diagnosed as high-risk types, making treatment more difficult.

3.Children over 5 years old: A small number of cases are diagnosed in 5 years old and above, accounting for about 5%-10% of all neuroblastoma patients. Tumors in this age group are often more aggressive and have a poorer prognosis.
Reasons for high incidence
The onset of neuroblastoma is related to developmental abnormalities of the sympathetic nervous system. During embryonic development, immature neural crest cells should differentiate into sympathetic nervous tissue. If the differentiation process is disturbed, these cells may proliferate abnormally and eventually form tumors. This abnormality often occurs in early life, resulting in the highest incidence of tumors in infancy and early childhood.
Clinical significance
The age distribution of the high incidence of neuroblastoma prompts parents to pay attention to symptoms such as unexplained masses, abdominal distension, and bone pain in infants and young children, and seek medical treatment promptly to improve the early diagnosis rate.
