What are the symptoms of late stage nasopharyngeal cancer?
The symptoms of late-stage nasopharyngeal cancer are relatively complex and diverse, and these symptoms may seriously affect the patient's quality of life.
1. Nasal symptoms
Nasal congestion: This is one of the common symptoms in the late stages of nasopharyngeal cancer. As the tumor enlarges and reduces the amount of air space in the nasal cavity, patients may experience persistent nasal congestion, which may be accompanied by snoring and sleep apnea. The severity of nasal obstruction varies depending on the size and location of the tumor. In severe cases, the patient may have difficulty breathing and require mouth breathing.
Nose bleeding: When the tumor surface ruptures, it will irritate the local mucosa and cause bleeding. Bleeding is mostly caused by aspiration, that is, there are blood streaks or blood clots in the mouth after the nose is aspirated. In the late stages, the frequency and amount of nosebleeds may increase, causing great distress to the patient.
2. Ear symptoms
Tinnitus and hearing loss: This is a common ear symptom in the late stages of nasopharyngeal cancer. Tumors may invade ear structures, especially the Eustachian tube, resulting in dysfunction of ear ventilation and drainage. Sufferers may hear a persistent buzzing or other unusual sounds and experience progressive hearing loss. In severe cases, tinnitus and ear congestion may even occur, seriously affecting the patient's quality of life.
3. Head and facial symptoms
Headache: This is one of the common symptoms of advanced nasopharyngeal cancer. Patients may experience severe headaches due to bone destruction or nerve invasion at the base of the skull. The pain is usually located in the trigeminal nerve distribution area and continues to worsen. This type of headache can seriously affect the patient's daily life and sleep.
Facial numbness and eyelid ptosis: The tumor spreads to surrounding tissues and compresses the oculomotor nerve, etc., which can lead to dysfunction of the nerves that control eye muscle movement, and then cause symptoms of eyelid ptosis. At the same time, facial skin numbness may be caused by tumor invasion of the trigeminal nerve. The appearance of these symptoms indicates that the condition is more serious.
Facial deformity and pain: Depending on the location and degree of erosion of nasopharyngeal cancer, patients with advanced stages of the disease may experience facial deformity or pain. These symptoms not only affect the patient's appearance, but may also cause the patient great physical pain.
4. Neck symptoms
Neck mass: This is one of the common signs in the late stages of nasopharyngeal cancer. Cancer cells metastasize to the lymph nodes in the neck, causing them to swell. The mass is usually hard in texture and has poor mobility. It can appear unilaterally or bilaterally at the same time. As the disease progresses, the lump may gradually increase in size, compressing surrounding tissue and causing pain and discomfort.
5. Systemic symptoms
Difficulty breathing: Advanced stages of nasopharyngeal cancer may cause obstruction of the airway, making it difficult to breathe. This is caused by reasons such as tumor growth or metastasis to the lungs.
Weight loss and loss of appetite: Patients may experience significant weight loss and loss of appetite due to tumor consumption and physical discomfort. These symptoms further exacerbate the patient's physical weakness and malnutrition.
Cachexia symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and weight loss: Patients with advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma are often accompanied by cachexia symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and weight loss. The appearance of these symptoms indicates that the disease has progressed to a more serious stage.
6. Symptoms of distant metastasis
Lung metastasis: Symptoms include cough, sputum, hemoptysis, dyspnea and other symptoms. This is one of the common distant metastases in the late stage of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Liver metastasis: Liver function damage occurs, manifesting as liver failure, jaundice and other symptoms. The occurrence of liver metastasis may further aggravate the patient's condition.
Bone metastasis: manifests as pain and other symptoms. Bone metastasis is also common in the late stage of nasopharyngeal cancer, which may cause patients with unbearable bone pain and even affect walking and daily life.
7. Other special symptoms
Diplopia and vision loss: Tumors may invade the optic nerve or eye movement nerve, causing patients to experience symptoms such as diplopia and vision loss. The occurrence of these symptoms may seriously affect the patient's daily life and work.
Hoarseness or loss of voice: Because nasopharyngeal cancer is located close to the larynx, patients with advanced stages of the disease may experience hoarseness or loss of voice. This is caused by the tumor compressing or invading the nerves and structures of the larynx.
