How long can one live with late-stage peritoneal cancer?
Survival for advanced peritoneal cancer varies depending on many factors, including the patient's overall health, treatment, how far the cancer has spread, and the tumor's response to treatment. Generally speaking, the prognosis of advanced peritoneal cancer is poor and the survival period is relatively short. However, with active treatment, the patient's survival period and quality of life may be improved. Here is some survival information for late-stage peritoneal cancer:
1.Factors affecting survival: The survival of patients with advanced peritoneal cancer is usually affected by a variety of factors. The most important factors include the stage of the cancer, whether it is receiving effective treatment, the patient's physical condition and immune system function. Studies have shown that the median survival for patients with advanced peritoneal cancer who are untreated or who receive only supportive care is typically 6 to12 months. However, if patients are able to receive surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy, survival may be prolonged.
2.Surgical treatment and survival: For some patients with advanced peritoneal cancer, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic perfusion chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been proven to prolong survival. According to some research data, the median survival time of patients with advanced peritoneal cancer who receive this treatment can reach 18 to 30 months, and some patients can even survive 5 years. This treatment helps remove cancer cells from the peritoneum and directs chemotherapy drugs to tumors in the abdominal cavity.

3.The effect of chemotherapy and targeted therapy: In addition to surgical treatment, chemotherapy and targeted therapy are also important treatments for advanced peritoneal cancer. Although peritoneal cancer responds poorly to conventional chemotherapy, the combination of certain drugs (such as platinum drugs, paclitaxel, etc.) or the use of targeted drug therapy targeting specific targets on cancer cells can sometimes achieve certain results. Patients with advanced disease may have a prolonged survival after receiving these treatments, but they generally still need to receive regular monitoring and adjustment of treatment plans.
4.Quality of life and palliative care: Although the possibility of cure for advanced peritoneal cancer is low, through palliative care, patients can relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, and extend survival. Palliative care includes pain management, nutritional support, psychological counseling, etc., aiming to improve the patient's quality of life and reduce the side effects of treatment.
In general, survival for advanced peritoneal cancer varies between individuals. Early diagnosis and active treatment can significantly improve patient prognosis and extend survival.
