Is peritoneal cancer the king of cancers?
Peritoneal cancer has been called"the king of cancers" incorrectly, even though it is a rare and challenging type of cancer. Peritoneal cancer is a malignant tumor that occurs in the peritoneum and is usually divided into two categories: primary and secondary. Secondary peritoneal cancer often metastasizes to the peritoneum from cancers in other organs, especially ovarian cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, etc. Peritoneal cancer is often considered a very serious type of cancer due to its insidious symptoms, high recurrence rate and difficulty in treatment, but it is not officially called the king of cancers.
1.Characteristics and challenges of peritoneal cancer: Peritoneal cancer is usually diagnosed late because early symptoms are often not obvious and symptoms are similar to many other abdominal diseases, such as bloating, indigestion, and weight loss. Many patients are diagnosed with peritoneal cancer at an advanced stage and therefore have poorer survival rates. In addition, cells from peritoneal cancer may spread rapidly to other areas of the abdomen through peritoneal fluid or blood, complicating treatment.

2.Treatment difficulty and prognosis: The treatment of peritoneal cancer is difficult, especially in the late stage. Conventional treatment methods such as chemotherapy, surgery, and targeted therapy have limited effects, especially peritoneal cancer, which is highly resistant to traditional chemotherapy drugs. Although some treatments, such as cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic perfusion chemotherapy (HIPEC), can improve the survival of some patients, the overall survival rate is still low. The five-year survival rate for peritoneal cancer is typically less than 20 percent, according to different studies.
3.Comparison with other cancers: Although peritoneal cancer has a poor prognosis, it is not generally considered"the king of cancers". "The King of Cancer"Usually refers to those cancers with extremely high incidence rates and extremely lethal rates, such as pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and liver cancer. For example, pancreatic cancer is widely considered to be one of the deadliest cancers due to its extremely high mortality rate and rapid progression. Although peritoneal cancer is complex and difficult to treat, it does not have the widespread impact of these cancers.
To sum up, although peritoneal cancer is a malignant tumor that is extremely difficult to treat, it cannot be called the king of cancers. Many other cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, remain more challenging in terms of lethality and lethality.
