How long can one box of bedaquiline be taken?
Bedaquiline is an anti-tuberculosis drug used to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). It mainly targets Mycobacterium tuberculosis that is resistant to other traditional anti-tuberculosis drugs. It is one of the major innovations in anti-tuberculosis treatment in recent years. It was developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals and was first approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012. The use of bedaquiline brings new hope to patients with complex and refractory tuberculosis.
Bedaquiline's unique mechanism of action is to prevent the bacteria from producing energy by inhibiting theATPsynthase of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. ATPSynthase is an enzyme necessary for bacterial growth. By blocking its function, bedaquiline can effectively kill or inhibit tuberculosis bacteria. This mechanism is different from other anti-tuberculosis drugs and reduces the possibility of cross-resistance with other drugs, which is particularly important in the context of increasing drug resistance.

The recommended course of bedaquiline is usually 24 weeks (approximately 6 months) and must be combined with other effective anti-tuberculosis drugs. Patients took 400 mg of bedaquiline daily for the first two weeks of treatment, followed by 200 mg three times a week from week 3 to week 24. This treatment plan ensures that the drug can continue to work in the body to inhibit and kill tuberculosis bacteria.
The specification of bedaquiline is100mg, and each box generally contains 24 tablets. According to the standard medication regimen, take 400mg daily during the first two weeks of treatment (i.e. 4 tablets per day). Each box of medicine can last for about 6 days. In subsequent weekly doses (200mg, 2 tablets each time, three times a week, a total of 6 tablets), one box of medicine can be used approximately 4week. Therefore, a box of bedaquiline can be used for anywhere from a week to a month, depending on the treatment cycle and dosage.
Bedaquiline, as a drug specially used for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, has greatly improved the effectiveness of treatment, but it needs to be managed carefully, especially the heart and liver side effects of the drug, and it must be strictly monitored and guided by doctors. The drug is used in combination with other anti-tuberculosis drugs throughout the course of treatment to enhance the effectiveness of treatment and reduce the risk of drug resistance.
