Can't I stop taking bedaquiline once I start taking it?
Bedaquiline is an anti-tuberculosis drug used to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). During treatment, bedaquiline is used in combination with other anti-tuberculosis drugs, often to treat complex and drug-resistant tuberculosis. However, the treatment plan for bedaquiline needs to strictly follow the doctor's guidance, and any decision to discontinue the drug midway must be made by the doctor based on the patient's specific situation.
Bedaquiline treatment usually lasts 24 weeks (approximately 6 months) and requires continued use to achieve its full effect. Bedaquiline needs to maintain drug concentration within a certain period of time to continuously inhibit and kill Mycobacterium tuberculosis. If the treatment process is interrupted, the killing effect of the drug on tuberculosis bacteria will be affected, and the treatment effect may be greatly reduced, and the bacteria cannot be completely eliminated, resulting in recurrence or aggravation of the disease.

Not completing treatment on time may lead to the development of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Especially in the context of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, the efficacy of bedaquiline is crucial. If the drug is stopped midway through the course of treatment, the tuberculosis bacteria may develop resistance to the drug, making future treatment more difficult.
Incomplete treatment may lead to recurrence of the disease, especially if the tuberculosis bacteria are not completely killed. The remaining bacteria in the patient's body may reproduce again, leading to the recurrence of tuberculosis, and even spreading drug-resistant tuberculosis bacteria to others, increasing public health risks.
In some special circumstances, patients may need to stop medication or adjust their treatment plan, which is usually evaluated by a doctor. If a patient develops serious side effects while taking bedaquiline, such as severely impaired liver function or significant prolongation of the QT interval on ECG, it may be necessary to consider adjusting the drug or discontinuing bedaquiline. If the patient has completed the treatment cycle recommended by the doctor, and clinical evaluation believes that tuberculosis bacteria have been completely eliminated, bedaquiline treatment can be terminated under the guidance of a doctor.
