What is melanoma
Melanoma, this term may sound unfamiliar, but it is a skin cancer that cannot be ignored. Melanoma starts in the melanocytes in our skin, which are the cells that make the pigment that gives our skin its unique color. However, when these melanocytes undergo malignant transformation, melanoma forms, threatening our health.
Melanoma usually appears on areas of skin that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the arms, back, face, and legs. These parts are exposed to ultraviolet rays for a long time, which increases the risk of malignant transformation of melanocytes. It is worth mentioning that melanoma is not limited to the surface of the skin. It can also form in the eyes and even, in rare cases, occur inside the body in hidden areas such as the nose or throat.

Despite ongoing research efforts, the exact cause of melanoma is not yet fully understood. However, the occurrence of most melanomas is closely related to ultraviolet exposure. Whether it is direct exposure to sunlight or indirect exposure from sunbathing lamps and sunbeds, it may be the cause of melanoma. Therefore, limiting UV exposure and taking sun protection measures are crucial to reducing the risk of melanoma.
In recent years, the risk of melanoma for people under 40, especially women, seems to be gradually increasing. This reminds us to pay more attention to our skin health and understand the symptoms of skin cancer. If you find any abnormal changes in moles or spots on your skin, such as darker color, irregular shape, blurred edges, etc., you should seek medical examination in time. Early detection and early treatment are the keys to defeating melanoma.
