What are the indications for avatrombopag (Avatrombopag, Sucoxin)?

Avatrombopag/Avatrombopag is an oral small molecule thrombopoietin receptor agonist, mainly used to treat thrombocytopenia. It effectively increases platelet counts without increasing platelet activation, thereby reducing the patient's need for blood transfusions. Thrombocytopenia is a common complication in patients with chronic liver disease, usually due to the chronic liver disease itself or to interferon-based antiviral therapy. These patients often require platelet transfusions before surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding.

An important indication for avatrombopag is for thrombocytopenia in adult patients with chronic liver disease scheduled to undergo medical procedures. Low platelet counts can increase the risk of excessive bleeding during certain medical procedures, and avatrombopag can help prevent this risk by encouraging the body to produce more platelets. In addition, avatropopag may be used to treat adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) when other treatments have not responded. Although this drug has significant efficacy in clinical applications, it should be noted that avatrombopag does not cure thrombocytopenia, nor does it restore patients' platelet counts to normal levels.

Avatrombopag was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2018, providing a new treatment option for patients with chronic liver disease. The drug is administered as an oral salt, making it the first oral treatment option for patients with chronic liver disease.
