Thalassemia is a rare genetic disease. In addition to iron removal and blood transfusion, most patients in China use oral dispersible tablets as treatment. Oral Desirox treatment is far safer and more convenient than blood transfusion, and has fewer side effects.

So, what conditions does Desirox mainly treat?

Indications of Desirox:

1. Patients with chronic iron overload transfusion hemosiderinosis secondary to blood transfusion who are 2 years old or older will develop symptoms of chronic iron overload when serum ferritin continues to be >1000 L. At this time, iron chelation therapy should be started.

2. Iron chelators can also be given to patients undergoing ASCT when iron overload occurs.

3. It can be used to treat reversible renal insufficiency caused by Fanconi syndrome.

Research on adverse effects of taking Desirox:

Phase III clinical studies have observed that high-dose use of Desirox can cause certain acute adverse reactions, such as gastrointestinal symptoms in 15% and rash in 11%, but patients who interrupt treatment due to these symptoms are rare. In 2008, the U.S. FDA received a report of a patient with encephalopathy who developed liver failure after taking Desirox for 5 days. The report revealed that the patient had a history of alcohol abuse and mild liver function abnormalities.

In addition, the patient had no indication for medication, and his serum ferritin level was 10% of the indications recommended in the drug package insert. The patient's liver function returned to normal after stopping the drug. Bauters et al. from Ghent University Hospital in Belgium reported a case of gastric ulcer in a child with thalassemia major after receiving Desirox treatment. According to the adverse reactions of Desirox reported in recent years, this case is the first, so it requires sufficient attention.

It may cause a rash. Generally, the rash will disappear automatically without the need to adjust the dosage or stop the medication. If the condition is severe or persistent, the medication should be stopped.
