It is an oral iron chelator produced by Novartis in Switzerland. It was first approved by the US FDA in 2005 and successfully entered my country in 2010. It is used for the treatment of chronic iron overload caused by frequent blood transfusions in beta-thalassemia patients aged 2 years and above and in patients with non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) syndrome aged 10 years and above.

Deferasirox has been on the market in my country for a long time, but for newly diagnosed patients who are taking the drug, they don’t know enough about it. Let’s mainly take a look at the instructions for use of deferasirox from Novartis, Switzerland.

It is recommended that patients with iron accumulation, such as those who require long-term blood transfusion (blood transfusion volume up to 100ml/kg) and whose serum ferritin exceeds 1000ug/L, are initially recommended to take deferasirox at a dose of 20mg/kg per day based on their body weight. If the serum ferritin index improves, the patient may need to adjust or increase the dose of deferasirox. Generally, the dose will be increased in units of 5mg/kg or 10mg/kg, but the total dose should not exceed 30mg/kg per day.

The use of deferasirox must be strictly followed by the doctor's instructions, and patients should not adjust the medication at will. Not recommended if you are allergic to deferasirox or its ingredients. Deferasirox should also not be taken with aluminum-containing antacids. Blind use of medication may affect the therapeutic effect of the medication or yourself.

Common side effects of Novartis include increased serum creatinine, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, proteinuria, irritation, headache, cough, nasopharyngitis, sore throat, influenza, and rash. Because every patient's physical condition is not exactly the same, the specific side effects vary from person to person. If serious and intolerable side effects occur during treatment, please contact your doctor in time.
