As a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, Ondansetron is widely used to prevent nausea and vomiting during pregnancy and chemotherapy patients. Ondansetron was successfully developed by the British company Glaxo (later acquired by Novartis Pharmaceuticals) in 1990. It was approved by the FDA for marketing in the United States in February 1991. my country began to import the product in 1990, and domestically produced ondansetron injection and tablets were launched in 1997. In 2001, the domestic sales of ondansetron alone were nearly $600 million, and the annual overseas sales exceeded $1 billion.
Ondansetron is a potent and highly selective 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonist. It is mainly used clinically as an antiemetic for nausea and vomiting caused by cytotoxic drug chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It can also be used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting after surgery. At antiemetic doses, ondansetron also promotes gastric emptying, helps reduce symptoms of nausea, and has anxiolytic and sedative effects on the central nervous system, inhibiting excitation of the vomiting center.
So how long does it take for ondansetron tablets to take effect? When a patient is treated with ondansetron tablets, how long it takes for the drug to take effect varies from person to person. Each patient's constitution is different, and the time and degree of therapeutic effect after taking the drug are also different. However, clinical trial data proves that ondansetron has a good antiemetic effect.
An open, multicenter study examined the efficacy of ondansetron in preventing non-cisplatin-induced vomiting in 193 patients. All patients received ondansetron 8 mg intravenously 20 minutes before chemotherapy and 4 mg ondansetron tablets orally after chemotherapy, twice a day. Results: The effective rate of ondansetron alone in treating acute vomiting caused by chemotherapy was 93.3% (of which the complete remission rate was 86.0%). The effective rates of antiemetics on days 1 to 5 were 93.3%, 94.8%, 96.9%, 99.5% and 99.5% respectively. This indicates that ondansetron alone is more effective in preventing vomiting caused by non-cisplatin and is also effective in delayed vomiting.
