What to do if skin itches due to chronic liver disease

It is a selective opioid kappa receptor agonist. It exerts an antipruritic effect through a new mechanism of action that is completely different from existing antihistamines or antiallergic drugs, and has a very good effect on skin itching in chronic liver disease.

Chronic liver disease skin itching

Chronic liver disease refers to liver disease with a course of more than half a year, including chronic hepatitis, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver cancer, etc. In addition to common digestive system symptoms, other multi-system symptoms may also occur. It has been clinically observed that patients with chronic liver disease often have skin changes, including eczema, lichenification, etc., with pruritus being the most common skin symptom. Itching is more common in patients with cholestatic liver disease. Itching is a feeling that can cause the desire to scratch. Severe itching has adverse effects on patients' life, sleep quality and mental health. Reducing itching and relieving symptoms are clinical problems that need to be solved.

Effects of nalfuraphine hydrochloride

After the launch of nalfuraphine hydrochloride orally disintegrating tablets and capsules, Japanese experts Kozono et al. evaluated the efficacy and safety of the drug in 3762 hemodialysis patients with refractory pruritus.

Within 12 weeks after the start of treatment with nalfuraphine hydrochloride, 82.50% of the patients' itching was relieved. After one year of continuous use, 84.95% of the patients were still effective in receiving the drug. Even as the treatment time was extended, the benefit rate increased instead of decreasing, which suggested that nalfuraphine hydrochloride has the possibility of long-term use. In terms of safety, only 10.69% of patients experienced treatment-related complications, most of them were tolerable, and no patient became dependent on nalfurapine hydrochloride. This indicates that oral administration of nalfurapine hydrochloride is safe and effective in clinical treatment of refractory pruritus in hemodialysis patients.
