Letermovir: Proper Usage and Important Precautions
Letermovir is a prescription medication used to prevent cytomegalovirus(CMV)infection in transplant patients. It is available in tablet and granule formulations. As its use is closely tied to post-transplant treatment schedules, patients must strictly follow their doctor's instructions and should not start or stop the medication on their own.
Tablet Administration
Letermovir tablets are taken orally once daily, with or without food.To maintain stable drug levels,it is recommended to take the medication at approximately the same time each day.Tablets should be swallowed whole and must not be cut, chewed,or crushed. The dosage should be strictly followed as prescribed;do not increase the frequency or amount of the dose.
Granule Administration
If using letermovir granules, sprinkle the granules onto a small amount of cold or room-temperature soft food(such as applesauce, yogurt,or pudding).Gently mix and swallow the entire mixture without chewing or crushing the granules. The mixture should be consumed within the specified time and not partially eaten. For patients requiring feeding tube administration, follow the specific instructions provided in the product labeling.
Important Precautions
The effectiveness of letermovir is not enhanced by taking higher doses or increasing the frequency of administration.Do not stop taking the medication even if you feel well.If a dose is missed,do not take a double dose to make up for it;resume your regular schedule at the next dose time.
Furthermore, transplant patients(such as those who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell or kidney transplants)often take multiple medications concurrently. It is crucial to be aware of potential drug interactions with letermovir.Always inform your doctor of all medications you are taking before starting treatment.
