On June 19, 2008, GlaxoSmithKline announced that the US FDA approved the combination of dutasteride (Avodart) and tamsulosin (Harnal) for the treatment of prostatic hyperplasia.

How effective is dutasteride treatment?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval was based on a 2-year, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical study—the first long-term clinical study to evaluate the combination of dutasteride and an alpha-blocker. The included patients were male patients with moderate to severe prostatic hyperplasia (age greater than or equal to 50 years, prostate volume (PV) ≥ 30cc, serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level 1.5 to 10ng/mL, 5mL/second < maximum urine flow rate (Qmax) ≤ 15mL/second, minimum urine output ≥ 125mL, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) ≥ 12). Patients first took placebo for 4 weeks, and then were randomized to receive dutasteride 0.5 mg/day and tamsulosin 0.4 mg/day, dutasteride 0.5 mg/day alone or tamsulosin 0.4 mg/day.

This clinical study shows that after 12 to 24 months, the combined treatment with tamsulosin is more effective than single treatment. The most common adverse reactions of dutasteride are impotence, decreased libido, breast disease (including breast enlargement and swelling), ejaculation disorders, and dizziness.
