Usage and Dosage

Drug overdoseA transient decrease in peripheral reticulocytes may occur if the dosage is greater than 2.75mg/kg.
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactationPregnancy:
In animal experiments, injectable artesunate has certain embryotoxicity to animals in early pregnancy (equivalent to the first three months of human pregnancy). However, clinical safety study data in early pregnancy do not yet indicate that this treatment will cause greater risks of harm to the fetus.
Breastfeeding women:
There is limited evidence that low amounts of artesunate's active metabolite, dihydroartemisinin, are present in the breast milk of breastfeeding women. This trace amount of the drug will neither cause adverse reactions in nursing infants nor give infants adequate protection against malaria.
