Tresiba (insulin degludec) is a long-acting insulin that starts working a few hours after injection and remains effective for 24 hours. Insulin is a hormone that works by lowering glucose (sugar) levels in the blood.

Insulin degludec is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with diabetes.

Insulin degludec can be used for type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Insulin degludec is available as a multi-dose vial or as a single-patient FlexTouch pen.

Tresiba FlexTouch is a disposable prefilled disposable pen available in two different sizes. U-100 (100 units/mL) contains 300 Insulin units, U-200 (200 units/mL) contains 600 units of insulin.

How to store insulin degludec

Do not freeze insulin or store it near the cooling element of the refrigerator. Throw away any frozen insulin. Store vial in original container away from heat and light.

Store unopened (unused) insulin degludec:

Refrigerate and use until shelf life; or

Store at room temperature and use within 8 weeks (56 days).

Storage opened (in use) insulin degludec:

Refrigerate or store at room temperature and use within 8 weeks. Do not store injection pens with needles attached.

Do not use if the medicine looks cloudy or discolored.

Dosage Information

Usual adult dosage of Tresiba for type 1 diabetes:

Dosage should be individualized based on clinical response; this basal insulin should be used in short-acting or rapid-acting insulin regimens Insulin-naïve patients:

Initial dosage: One-third to one-half of the total daily insulin requirement as a once-daily subcutaneous injection.

- The initial total daily insulin requirements for insulin-naïve patients are usually 0.2 to 0.4 units of insulin per kilogram of body weight.

Current insulin users:

Start with a once-daily subcutaneous injection of your current long-acting or intermediate-acting insulin at the same total daily dose.

Usual adult dosage of Tresiba for type 2 diabetes:

Initial dose: 10 units subcutaneously once daily

Current insulin users:

Start with a once-daily subcutaneous injection of your current long-acting or intermediate-acting insulin at the same total daily dose.
