Hydrocortisone () is also known as prednisolone, cortisol, and cortisol. Its chemical name is 11β,17α,21-trihydroxypregnant-4-en-3,20-dione (11-beta,17-alpha,2 1-trihydroxypregn-4-ene-3,20-dione) is a glucocorticoid secreted by the adrenal cortex. Its anti-inflammatory effect is three times that of corticosterone, but its Na2+ retention performance is lower than that of corticosterone. Hydrocortisone has anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, antitoxin, and anti-shock effects.

Pharmacological effects of hydrocortisone: (1) Anti-inflammatory effect: It has an effect on inflammation caused by various causes except viruses. Glucocorticoids reduce and prevent tissue responses to inflammation, thereby alleviating the symptoms of inflammation. They can also inhibit the repair of tissues in the later stages of inflammation and reduce sequelae. (2) Immunosuppressive effect: Prevent or inhibit cell-mediated immune responses, delayed allergic reactions, and reduce the expansion of primary immune responses. (3) Anti-toxic and anti-shock effects: Glucocorticoids can improve the body's tolerance, reduce cell damage, and play a role in protecting the body. It also dilates blood vessels, enhances myocardial contractility, and improves microcirculation.

How effective is it? The clinical trial selected 60 patients with hypercortisolism to explore the application and efficacy of two oral hormones, hydrocortisone and prednisone, in postoperative hormone replacement therapy in patients with hypercortisolism. The results showed that the two groups of patients did not experience adrenocortical insufficiency during hormone replacement therapy. The average drug withdrawal time in the hydrocortisone group was (6.61±1.25) months, and the average drug withdrawal time in the prednisone group was (4.90±1.06) months. The blood and urine Cor levels of the two groups of patients after surgery were significantly lower than those before surgery in the same group. The postoperative serum sodium and potassium levels of the two groups of patients were significantly lower than those of the same group before surgery.
