1. ELMIRON ® is a weak anticoagulant (1/15 of the activity of heparin). At the daily dose of 300 mg (n = 128), 6.3% of patients reported rectal bleeding as an adverse event. Bleeding complications including ecchymosis, epistaxis, and gingival bleeding have been reported (see Adverse Reactions).

2. Similar products administered subcutaneously, sublingually or intramuscularly (not initially metabolized by the liver) are associated with delayed immunoallergic thrombocytopenia, accompanied by thrombosis and bleeding symptoms. ELMIRON should be used with caution in patients with a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.

3. Hair loss is related to pentosan polysulfate and heparin products. In clinical trials of ELMIRON®, hair loss began within the first 4 weeks of treatment. 97% of reported cases of hair loss are alopecia areata, which is limited to a single area on the scalp.

4. ELMIRON ® has not been studied in patients with liver dysfunction. Because there is evidence that the liver contributes to the elimination of ELMIRON®, hepatic impairment may affect the pharmacokinetics of ELMIRON®. ELMIRON ® should be used with caution in this patient population.
