Can I drink alcohol while taking Orlistat?

Ethanol does not affect the effect of Orlistat (Orlistat) in preventing fat absorption. In a multiple-dose study in 30 normal-weight subjects, coadministration of orlistat with 40 g of alcohol (e.g., approximately 3 glasses of wine) did not result in changes in alcohol pharmacokinetics, orlistat pharmacodynamics (fecal fat excretion), or orlistat systemic exposure. Orlistat is a non-centrally acting anti-obesity drug that inhibits the activity of gastrointestinal lipase and reduces fat absorption. In principle, drinking alcohol may increase the side effects of medications, including gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhea, etc. Alcohol itself also contains calories and will increase weight, so drinking is not recommended.
