Is Ado-trastuzumab emtansine a targeted drug or a chemotherapy drug?
Ado-trastuzumab emtansine, technically known as a HER2-targeted antibody-drug conjugate, consists of two anti-cancer drugs, a HER2-targeted drug therapy (trastuzumab) and a chemotherapy drug (emtansine DM1). Trastuzumab finds and attaches to receptors on the outside of HER2+ cells. Here, it works by stopping cell growth and enhancing the immune system's effectiveness in killing cancer cells. Trastuzumab also enters cells and breaks down to release chemotherapy drugs. Chemotherapy works inside cells, causing them to die.
