How does Budesonide capsules work?

Budesonid, the ingredient in Budesonid capsules (Budesonid), has high local glucocorticoid (GCS) activity and substantial first-pass elimination. The formulation contains granules that are coated to prevent dissolution in gastric juices, but which dissolve atpH >5.5, i.e. typically when the granules reach the duodenum. Thereafter, an ethylcellulose matrix containing budesonide controlled the release of the drug into the intestinal lumen in a time-dependent manner. Budesonide has a high glucocorticoid effect and a weak mineralocorticoid effect. The affinity of budesonide for the GCS receptor (reflecting the intrinsic potency of the drug) is approximately 200 times that of cortisol and 15 times that of prednisolone.
