What are the options for using and taking Guanfacine?
Guanfacine is currently mainly marketed in the form of extended release tablets (Extended Release Tablet). It is a central nervous system modulating drug that is taken orally once a day. Its unique controlled release system can slowly release active ingredients within 24 hours to avoid adverse reactions caused by fluctuations in blood concentration. It is especially suitable for adolescent patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who require long-term stable medication.
The dosage setting of guanfacine is different in the treatment of different age groups. For children and adolescents under 18 years of age, if the weight is less than 50 kg, the recommended starting dose is 1 mg once a day; if the weight is ≥ 50 kg, the recommended starting dose is 2 mg once a day. Each dose should be increased at least one week apart and gradually increased in steps of 1 mg to monitor tolerance. The maintenance dose is generally 2-4 mg once a day, and the maximum dose does not exceed 6 mg.
For adult patients 18 years old and above, the starting dose is usually 2 mg once a day, and the dose is also gradually increased in 1 mg increments. The maintenance dose range for most adults is 4-6 mg once daily. Guanfacine should be taken at a fixed time every day. It can be taken with food or on an empty stomach. However, the tablet must be swallowed whole and cannot be broken or chewed to prevent the drug from being released too quickly and causing increased side effects.
During the dosage adjustment period, doctors will conduct a comprehensive assessment based on the patient's blood pressure, heart rate, sleep and attention performance to ensure a balanced drug effect. If the drug needs to be discontinued, the dose must be gradually reduced to prevent rebound hypertension or withdrawal reactions such as anxiety and irritability. It is generally recommended to reduce the dose by 1 mg per week until complete discontinuation.
The sustained-release dosage form of guanfacine is key to its clinical success. Compared with ordinary tablets, sustained-release preparations can significantly reduce problems such as daytime drowsiness, blood pressure fluctuations and dizziness. Its sustained effect enables patients to maintain stable concentration during the day without affecting sleep at night.
