Correct usage and recommended dosage of semaglutide injection
Semaglutide injection (Wegovy) is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. It is suitable for adults who are overweight or obese and for patients with type 2 diabetes who need to control their blood sugar. Semaglutide not only helps improve weight, but also improves blood sugar levels in diabetic patients by regulating appetite and increasing insulin secretion.
The correct use of semaglutide is by subcutaneous injection once a week. The injection time can be chosen according to personal circumstances, but each injection should be carried out on the same day, whether before or after eating. At the beginning of treatment, the dose usually needs to be gradually increased to reduce the patient's side effects, especially gastrointestinal discomfort.
1. Initial dose: The initial dose of semaglutide is0.25 mg/week. This dose is used in the first 4 weeks. The purpose of this dosage is to allow the patient's body to gradually adjust to the drug, thereby reducing side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort.
2. Gradual increase: From the 5th week to the 8th week, the dose will be increased to 0.5 mg/week. Then, from weeks 9 to 12, the dose is increased to 1 mg/week. By gradually increasing the dose, patients can better adapt to the effects of the drug while minimizing the occurrence of side effects.
3. Maintenance dose: Starting from the 13th week, patients can choose a maintenance dose based on treatment effect and tolerance. For patients with weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction, the recommended maintenance dose is 1.7 mg/week or 2.4 mg/week, as determined by the physician based on patient response and goals. If the patient cannot tolerate the 2.4 mg dose, it can be reduced to 1.7 mg/week and then adjusted as needed.
For those withtype 2 diabetes, regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is required while using semaglutide to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment. If symptoms of hypoglycemia or other discomfort occur during use, you should promptly communicate with your doctor to adjust the treatment plan.
