How long does it take to take Cabergoline to achieve the desired effect?
Cabergoline (Cabergoline) is a highly efficient and long-acting dopamine receptor agonist, mainly used to treat hyperprolactinemia (hyperprolactinemia), pituitary prolactinoma, Parkinson's disease and other diseases. Its core mechanism of action is to activate dopamine D₂ receptors, thereby inhibiting the secretion of prolactin (Prolactin) by the anterior pituitary gland and restoring endocrine balance. Cabergoline has the advantages of long half-life, stable onset of action, and low dosage frequency, so it is widely recommended as a first-line treatment drug. For patients, understanding the drug's onset of action and length of treatment is crucial for rational drug use and efficacy evaluation.
In general, cabergoline has a mild but long-lasting effect. In most patients, prolactin levels in the body can be significantly reduced within 2 to 4 weeks after starting the medication, and some patients can even detect a decrease in prolactin within a week after taking the medication for the first time. However, to achieve the desired effect (ie, prolactin returns to normal, menstruation returns to regularity, or fertility function improves), continuous treatment is usually required for 3 to6 months. For patients with pituitary prolactinoma, cabergoline can also gradually reduce the size of the tumor. This process is generally noticeable after 3 months of treatment. If the treatment is continued for 6 months to 12 months, significant shrinkage can often be seen on imaging.

The length of drug treatment also depends on the individual condition. For patients with pure hyperprolactinemia, once prolactin levels return to normal and remain stable for more than 6 months, doctors may consider tapering or discontinuing the drug. However, for patients with larger pituitary tumors or longer course of disease, maintenance treatment is often required for 1 to 2 years or even longer to consolidate the curative effect and prevent recurrence. Studies have shown that long-term use of cabergoline can not only effectively control prolactin levels, but also maintain a tumor suppressive state. Most patients can still maintain a low recurrence rate even after stopping the drug.
It should be noted that cabergoline is a prescription drug and should be used strictly in accordance with the doctor's instructions. Do not adjust the dosage or stop taking the drug early. The conventional starting dose is 0.25mg to 0.5mg (can be divided into 11~2 doses), and is gradually increased according to efficacy and tolerance. Premature discontinuation or insufficient dosage may lead to prolactin rebound or tumor recurrence; while excessive dosage may cause adverse reactions such as nausea, hypotension, dizziness or drowsiness. Doctors usually monitor blood prolactin levels and MRI regularlyimages, and treatment options can be adjusted based on the results. Generally speaking, most patients can see significant effects within about 3 months of regular medication, and continuous and standardized treatment for more than half a year can often achieve ideal long-term control effects.
