What is cabotegravir?

Cabotegravir (Cabotegravir) is a new type of antiretroviral drug that belongs to the category of integrase inhibitors. Its mechanism of action is by inhibiting the integrase activity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), preventing the virus from transcribing its RNA into host cell DNA and integrating it into the host cell's genome. In this way, it can effectively inhibit the replication and reproduction of HIV virus, thereby reducing the amount of virus in the host body.

Cabotegravir was originally developed as an oral drug to treatHIV infections. However, in recent years, it has also been studied for long-term prevention of HIV transmission. Especially in the form of long-acting injections, this treatment is called long-acting preventive antiretroviral therapy (Long-Acting Pre-exposure Prophylaxis, LAPR) or long-acting preventive therapy (Long-Acting Pre-exposure Chemoprophylaxis, LAPC). Long-acting injection of cabotegravir can be continuously released in the body, providing sustained antiviral effects and reducing the risk of HIV infection in high-risk groups.

Cabotegravir is a prescription drug and must be used under the supervision of a doctor. For patients treated for HIV infection, cabotegravir is often given as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) to provide more effective treatment.
