Pirfenidone (Pirfenidone) is the first drug approved for the treatment of mild to moderate idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). It is an oral drug with anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is characterized by progressive changes in lung structure that lead to coughing and dyspnea, and ultimately lung failure and death.

In general, there are two main reasons for discontinuing pirfenidone therapy, intolerable side effects and/or lack of efficacy.
