Opicapone is available as oral capsules (25 mg and 50 mg), with the recommended dose of 50 mg taken once daily at bedtime, at least one hour before and after levodopa combination medication. In people with Parkinson's disease, cells in the brain that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine begin to die, and the amount of dopamine in the brain decreases. The patient then loses the ability to reliably control his or her movements. The active substance in opicapone restores dopamine levels in parts of the brain that control movement and coordination. It also enhances the effects of levodopa, an orally available copy of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which blocks catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), an enzyme involved in the breakdown of levodopa in the body.
