What medicine is Olaparib?

Olaparib is a selective and potent inhibitor of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), including PARP1 and PARP2. PARP inhibitors represent a new class of anticancer therapies that work by exploiting defects in DNA repair in cancer cells with BRCA mutations and inducing cell death. Olaparib is often used to treat cancer of the breast, ovary, fallopian tube, pancreas, prostate, or peritoneum (the membrane that covers the inside of the abdomen and covers some internal organs).

Lynparza may sometimes be used under a doctor's direction when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, or when the cancer has come back after being treated with other drugs. Lynparza is sometimes used only if a patient's cancer has a specific genetic marker (an abnormal "BRCA" or "HRR" gene), and your doctor will test you for this gene. Olaparib may also be used for purposes not listed in this Medication Guide. Olaparib is usually taken twice a day, at regular intervals, about 12 hours apart.
