The role and efficacy of Obinutuzumab
Obinutuzumab is used to treat or slow the progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and follicular lymphoma. It targets a specific antigen called CD20 on normal and cancerous B lymphocytes, which signals the immune system to attack and destroy these cells. Stem cells are not affected because they do not have this antigen.
Otuzumab is a monoclonal antibody, which is a man-made protein that works similarly to human antibodies in the immune system. They are a type of "targeted" cancer treatment, but are usually only used in cancers for which the antigen (and its specific antibody) has been identified. Otuzumab targets a specific antigen called CD20, a protein found on normal and cancerous B lymphocytes. Otuzumab binds to this protein, which signals cells in our immune system to attack and kill labeled B cells. This occurs through several different mechanisms, such as activation of signaling pathways that trigger cell death. While otuzumab causes cell death in normal and malignant B cells, stem cells, the young cells in the bone marrow that develop into various cell types, do not have the CD20 antigen and are not vulnerable to attack.
