Is Mosunetuzumab a chemotherapy drug?

Mosunetuzumab is not a traditional chemotherapy drug. It is a drug in the field of immunotherapy, specifically an immune checkpoint inhibitor.

Chemotherapy drugs usually kill cancer cells by interfering with their DNA or the cell division process of rapidly dividing cancer cells. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, motuzumab works by mobilizing the patient's own immune system to attack cancer cells. It connects T cells and malignant B cells, activating immune cells so that they can more effectively identify, locate and destroy malignant B cells, thereby achieving the goal of treatment.

Motuzumab's antibody structure is uniquely designed so that it can target two different proteins at the same time, namely CD3 and CD20. CD3is present on the surface of T cells, while CD20 is mainly present on the surface of B cells, including malignant B cells. By binding to both CD3 and CD20, motuzumab directs the patient's T cells to the vicinity of the cancer B cells. Once T cells come into contact with CD20-positive malignant B cells, motuzumab prompts T cells to release toxic substances, such as perforin and cytotoxic enzymes, to directly attack cancer cells. In addition to activating T cells, motuzumab can also activate natural killer cells (NK cells) and other immune cells, enhancing the immune system's attack on malignant B cells.

Thus, motuzumab represents a treatment alternative to conventional chemotherapy and is often considered in patients who are no longer sensitive to conventional treatments or have limited therapeutic efficacy. Its mechanism of action is more specific, reducing damage to healthy cells and has potential long-term immune effects, making the body better able to fight off the recurrence of cancer. However, motuzumab may also be associated with some side effects and needs to be used under the supervision of a professional doctor.
