Can Vandetanib treat hepatoblastoma?

The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been increasing, and the combination of anti-angiogenic drug therapy and radiation therapy is a promising new approach. In radiosensitization of multiple hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines2D and 3D studies, combined treatment with vandetanib and radiation was more beneficial than treatment alone, reducing cell viability, migration, and in vitro invasion. The effects of combination therapy were most striking in vivo, where a syngeneic mouse model of hepatocellular carcinoma found that tumors treated with the combination were significantly smaller in size than those treated with either treatment alone, a reduction that persisted during vandetanib treatment and resulted in an additive benefit in overall survival compared with either treatment alone. Collectively, these findings contribute to the characterization of vandetanib as a radiosensitizer for hepatocellular carcinoma and suggest the need for clinical trial exploration of this treatment combination.
