Partial responses indicated a reduction in total tumor size of more than 30%, and complete response rates indicated no residual basal cell carcinoma tumors on subsequent biopsies. Vimodegib has also been studiedas neoadjuvant therapy. In an open-label clinical trial of 15 patients, the use of vismodegib as neoadjuvant treatment before surgery for high-risk basal cell carcinoma resulted in a 34.8% reduction in surgical defect size, no recurrence, and no skipped areas in the resected tumor mass. The study was small, with only 11 patients completing treatment with vismodegib.
